What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?


Counselling and psychotherapy involve talking to a therapist in order to explore difficulties and distress in your life. As your therapist, I will work along-side you to enable you to better understand yourself and become aware of your deeper thoughts and emotions. I will help you to focus on what is important to you and identify goals for the sessions. In short term therapy, we will regularly review goals to help you to stay with the more immediate problems that have brought you to therapy. In longer term therapy, you will have more opportunity to explore and become aware of experiences and challenges that have shaped your personality. As the relationship between us develops, I will endeavour to help you to develop self-awareness and to make changes in your life.

The aim of counselling and psychotherapy is to promote wellbeing through personal growth and to help to resolve crises and life problems. Although this is not always appropriate and our work together may be in accepting, understanding or coming to terms with present or past experiences so that you can move forward with your life.

Short-term counselling (5 to 15 weeks) can be effectively used to help to deal with present and ongoing problems and to develop self-understanding and insight into patterns of behaviour and ways of being. In longer term counselling and psychotherapy, problems can be explored in more depth.

My Approach


I work as a humanistic integrative counsellor which means that I can help you to explore your own thoughts and feelings and to work out your own solutions to your problems. I also work integratively, meaning that I use different approaches depending on what works for you, how you want to work and the nature of the problem.

During our therapy sessions together, our work will be centred round developing a safe, secure environment and a supportive relationship. This will enable you to explore your thoughts, feelings and life in a confidential, non-judgmental atmosphere.
